Benefits and Features
Based on our research and stakeholder analysis, we have identified the following necessary features for the new rendition of the GSU course registration system.
These features are designed to address key needs and support the goals of our university, including empowerment of students and faculty with digital systems to enable academic success, commitment to diversity and inclusion, and modernization of university’s architecture for future growth.
1. Course Searching
-
Description: Enables GSU students to search courses from the university course database to provide updated information on courses.
-
Benefits: Eliminates uncertainty by providing current status on courses and enables quick, informed decisions for students looking to build their schedules and find availability in required courses.
2. Schedule Building and Management
-
Description: Enables students to plan and manage schedules and backup schedules to submit for registering once their registration window opens.
-
Benefit: Allows students to register a whole schedule rather than only one course at a time. Backup schedules ensure that students aren’t stuck without a full schedule before courses fill up.
3. Course Registering
-
Description: Allows students to officially enroll in courses either through course codes or pre-built schedules when their registration period opens.
-
Benefit: Solidifies scheduling and course enrollment for students and updates seat counters on registered courses ensuring accurate counts.
4. Automated Waitlist Management
-
Description: Allows users to enable notifications on desired courses to receive automatic updates when a seat opens up through SMS or email.
-
Benefit: Increases efficiency, usability, and transparency in the student course registration process. Also reduces manual monitoring of courses and unnecessary advisor intervention.
5. Advisor Dashboard
-
Description: Compiles together all student data including courses, degree data, financial info, academics, and personal information into one place.
-
Benefit: Enables advisors to search a student and see the ‘big picture’ view of their status at the university. Advisors will be able to help students quicker and see more information in one place instead of having to search other GSU systems or external systems.
6. Mobile UI Support
-
Description: Allows students to easily complete basic tasks on mobile devices including course searching, schedule creation, and course registering.
-
Benefit: With a mobile-first approach, students can intuitively interact with the course registration system from any device with an internet connection reducing stress when travelling, or securing a waitlist spot for a required course.
7. Inclusive & Accessible Design
-
Description: Build compliance for WCAG 2.1, multilingual support, and an accessibility mode for international students and disabled students.
-
Benefit: Enables nearly any student to interact with the registration system without needing support from other university staff to improve autonomy and support GSU’s mission for inclusivity.
8. IT Dashboard
-
Description: A dashboard for the IT team to monitor system load, performance, and system logs to detect system crashes and support occurring errors.
-
Benefit: Better equips the IT team to monitor and handle errors occuring within the system to prevent downtime on users.
